The January Challenge is ON!!

We're staring the New Year in the face, and I bet we all have a lot of writing goals for ourselves in 2012.  Let's kick it off to a great start with our January Writing Challenge!

As always, the rules are flexible.  You decide what you most want to accomplish in the month of January, and you write it down.  Then, for thirty-one days, you work diligently toward that goal.  It could be researching your book, rough drafting your book, editing your book - whatever you need to get done, that's what you focus on for the month.  You come here and report in, cheer each other on, and have a lot of fun all at the same time.

If this sounds like something you'd like to do, just leave a comment in this trail and tell me that you're on board.  Also give me a summary of your goal for the month.  Then, starting at 12:01 am on January 1st, get busy!!  Well, you don't actually have to stay up past midnight ... but you can if you want to.

I hope to see lots of you on here - I have some pretty hefty goals of my own, and I'll need my own personal cheerleading squad!

Welcome aboard!

I'd love to do this, but I'm not sure what a 10-day jaunt in the middle of the month will do to my goals.

Can it be editing?

Tristi Pinkston said...

It can be anything you need it to be, Donna.

Unknown said...

I'd love to join, just need to decide on a doable goal.

Count me in!

Tristi Pinkston said...

Welcome aboard, Amy!

Unknown, we'd love to have you as soon as you're ready to leap in.

While working on the third book of my Bariwon series, my muse kept insisting I work on another project. My goal is to satisfy my muse by getting the first draft written of this other project by the end of January.

Nisa said...

Count me in! I have two projects. 5 chapters of editing for one book and 30k words for another book.

That's only 1k a day. I should be able to handle that! (Well, almost. I don't write on Sundays.)

I am in, Tristi! I just need to solidify the goal. . .

Christy B said...

Yay! Count me in, please. I want to finish outlining my novel and have the character and setting sheets finished as well.

As a side note: this fits in perfectly with the "Don't break the chain" calendar I downloaded for free from writersstore.com. This challenge is a great way to kick off my desire to not break the chain in 2012 and accomplish the goals I set! Thanks, Tristi!

Tristi Pinkston said...

Christy, I just went and got the calendar too - how awesome is that? Thanks for recommending it.

My goal is to write 500 words a day for the entire year. They don't have to be on the same book, but I have to actually churn those words out. I'll check in with you and let you know how I'm doing!

Tristi Pinkston said...

Great to have you all here - I'm excited that you are participating!

Unknown said...

Tristi, I don't know why I'm showing up as Unknown, it's me, Heather Pack.

Tristi Pinkston said...

Well, hello, Heather Pack! It just makes you more mysterious.

I'll jump on board! Maybe this will give me a reason to actually write, since all you cyber-people will be holding me accountable. I'm shooting for 1/2 a manuscript.

Stephanie said...

Maybe some accountability is exactly what I need... So, I'm goin' to throw my hat in. My goal for January is to finish my current WIP and get an outline and at least 20k into the novel I've been researching. Hopefully this isn't too ambitious since my younger kids will be home from school the second half of the month, but hey, whats a goal if it's not lofty, right? :)

Yes, making a goal is exactly what I need. I want to write 20,000 words in January. Thanks for the challenge!

Pam Williams said...

Okay, I'm in.

L.L. Muir said...

Me too!

I've got to get some revisions done on my angel romance, then get a novella written for Valentine's Day. Gotta finish both by Feb 1. This is just what I need.

Thanks!

I'm going to kick off my marathon writing year--I want to do NaNoWriMo every month this year by writing 50,000 words every month, including January.

Angie said...

I'm in! I'm going to set a goal to write 50 pages in January!

Anna Maria Junus said...

I'm on board. I downloaded the don't break the chain calendar and I plan on writing something every day whether it be book, blog or journal.

For January I plan on working on a new book and editing an older one.

Karen Hoover said...

I don't know why my previous post didn't show up, but I'm in. I keep telling people book 3 will be out in March and I've got some serious work ahead of me if it's going to happen. This is just what I need. :) Thanks, Tristi!

I have an app on my android phone called "habit streak" that is probably similar to the "don't break the chain" calendar. It keeps track of how many days in a row you do something. It's gotten me flossing my teeth every night. :-) I'm definitely going to be using it for writing. My goal is to write something every day in the month of January. I want to finish the draft of the book I started writing for Nano. But even if I don't get that done, just getting in the habit of writing every day is what I'm really going for.

kbrebes said...

My goal is to write every day, too. The don't-break-the-chain-calendar is cool!

J. A. Bennett said...

I'm in! I totally need to get working on editing my current WIP. What a great idea!

Jeanettethewriter said...

I'd love to participate but I'll be gone the first two weeks of January.

Unknown said...

I'd like to take part in your challenge and work on my project a children's book for every day of the year.

Shayla J Maybury said...

This is FABOO! I was looking for some motivation and this is it! Thank you! I will be working on finishing my essays that will become my speeches and chapters in my book (or in some order like that). I have 4 children (youngest is 14 months old) and I am going into surgery in one week with a 3 week recovery time so I will need the motivation and encouragement of others!

T.J. said...

Okay, I'm finally gonna give this a go. (Yay!) My goal for January is to draft and revise chapters 2 and 3 in this new book of mine.
My current method of attack for this book is to write a chapter. Let it be for a day or so. And then revise it.
Also, as I do this, I need to focus on having more tension in my stories. So conflict is a huge goal of mine.

Betsy Love said...

My goal for the new year/January is to finish Jericho and Lucy (one that keep putting on the back burner). I just need to tighten up some of the plot, edit and then voila--a finished mystery/suspense ready for a few beta readers.

Ted said...

count me in, my goal is as simple as working on my story in some way every day.

Kristy said...

Thanks for doing this. I'm in. My goals are to edit the pants off my novel A Ghost of a Second Chance, do some sort of marketing five days a week, and read my long ago written novel a Library in Rhyme without that horrible critic screaming naughty words in my ear.

Mary Ann said...

I'm in. My goal for January is to finish revising my book once and for all. I may ask for your help with this--historical fiction about my great grandmother, a midwife in 19th century Salt Lake Valley.

Chris said...

So, I have NEVER completed writing a book in my life, and it has always been one of those bucket list items for me. I am not incredibly good at it, and have no thoughts of glory, etc, but I started a story this past year (and haven't gotten very far). Maybe if I join your challenge, I can make some progress towards this goal. I know that many of you have high word count goals, but I struggle to write very much in each setting, so I am going to start low with a goal of 5,000 words (honestly, I will struggle to make it this far) in my current story. Thanks for the push to do something that has been a goal since I read and watched Anne of Green Gables when I was young.

Tristi Pinkston said...

Welcome aboard, all you new folks! Glad you're here.

Jenny Moore said...

I'm going to get this book edited! Baby steps...

Jordan McCollum said...

The achievable version: get through the second quarter of edits on my 2010-2011 MS if it kills me, and make notes for an edit of my 2011 Nano MS. And blog.

The swing for the fences version: Finish editing both! Blog amazingly!

Now, how crazy am I?

Heidi said...

Oh, what a great idea! I'm an old hand at loving to write, but brand new to making writing goals. I'll shoot for 5,000 words during my boys' naps and see how it goes. :)

Thanks, Tristi!

p.s. I saw you over on LDSWBR. It's good to meet you! :)

Tristi Pinkston said...

It's good to meet you too, Heidi, and welcome to everyone else who has joined us this afternoon. We're getting a really awesome group together here!

Wow, you've already got everyone! But I need some sort of accountability, so, I'm in too. I've got to get the draft on my current manuscript done as well as other projects.

Shantal said...

I'm new to all of this, but I do have a project that needs much more of my attention. I think this will be good for me.

Marta O. Smith said...

I printed out that writer's calendar from the link you sent. Tonight was my first X. My goal is to write something every day and not break the chain.

Carlajo said...

This year, I'm going to write at least 1000 words on my current project every week, plus the editing and rewriting on the rest.
That means at least 2 chapters a month, plus all the marketing, ect. Go team!

lisasanuma said...

I want to write 1000 words every day in January. I'd try for 50K, but with starting a new business, I think I'm going to be satisfied with 1K a day.

Jennifer Holt said...

I'm in, too! I'm going to finish my WIP in January...about 20,000 words to go!

Linda Bolton said...

I'm in...need to finish synopsis and start draft on next book. Busy month...Need accountability.

Queen 'Bina said...

I SO need this! I want to revisit my NaNo fail from a few years ago. I have about 30000 words and a rockin' concept. I need to outline what I've written so far and finish plotting the story, which is tricky because I'm pretty sure this one will end up being a trilogy. Wish me luck!

And much luck to the rest of you.

I'm in! There will be quite a few days where not much will get done because of my upcoming trips to PCMC with my son, but I'd like to write at least 1000 words each day. Thanks for the challenge Tristi!

lisasanuma said...

Got over 1600 words written for day one! Woot!

Heather Justesen said...

Wow, this is quite a crowd this time! I'm in. Besides mucho marketing to do for my new release, I want to edit at least one chapter a day (six days a week) on a book i received edits back from friends on before Thanksgiving, and I have a book to typeset for a client, and some critiquing to do for friends.on the off chance that I finish all that before month's end, I have scads more editing to do.

Anna said...

I'm on board. :) Last time I joined, I got 5000 words out in a month. Which is a lot for me.

My goal is just to write on my WIP. It doesn't matter if I get only a few words or a lot. Just write.

But I am hoping for another 5000+ words.

Julene and Gabe said...

I am definitely on board. My goal is to write 30 pages this month. There, now it's in writing so I have to do it! Thankyou, Tristi! It helps to have a motivator!

G. Parker said...

I'm late coming in on it, but I'm in!! I've resolved to get more editing done this year and get things submitted for publishing. So, this month is a big editing month. My goal is to get my nano book edited by the end of the month. Thanks!! ;)
