Time to Sign Up for the April Book in a Month Challenge

We're halfway through March and it's time to start thinking about our April writing goals. What are you hoping to accomplish this spring? Are you going to keep working on your current project? Are you ready to start something new? Are you putting pen to paper for the first time and need someone to cheer you on? You've come to the right place.

Many of you are previous participants in my writing challenges. Some of you will be attending the LDStorymakers Writers Conference this weekend and are going to come home fired up and ready to go. Others are new to this site and aren't sure what to expect, so I'll tell you how we do things around here.

1. Leave a comment in the trail for this blog and tell me your name and what your goals are for April. Ideally, when doing a Book in a Month challenge, you are trying to get as much written as humanly possible. It's your project for that month. You're focusing on it like nothing else. However, this isn't always possible, and so some participants set the goal of writing for half hour a day. I encourage you to set a goal that will stretch you just a little bit but isn't so far out of reach that you feel hopeless. Only you can decide the goal that's best for you.

2. On your own blog, write a post about your goal and link it back to this blog. Tell your readers what you're doing -- they'll be a good support system for you as well. That is, if your readers are as good as mine are.

3. Between now and April 1st, think about what you'd like to accomplish, specifically. Make notes on ideas you have. Get your brain geared up so you are ready to go.

4. At 12:01 am on April 1st, you are free to start writing. Write as much as you can and don't stop until 12:00 midnight on the eve of April 30th. I do ask that you check in regularly and tell me what progress you made. I will post my progress daily and will give writing tips, encouragement, and will answer questions. At the end of the challenge, please check in with the total for the month so I can add them all together. And remember, we're writing, not editing. Don't let yourself get bogged down in making everything just perfect. Get the ideas out on the paper and don't be critical. We edit when we're done writing. If you backspace every thirty seconds, you won't get very far.

5. I encourage you to visit the blogs of the other participants and get to know each other. The more we cheer each other on, the more inclined we'll be to keep writing.

If you have any questions, leave them in this comment trail as well. Thanks for joining me -- we're going to have so much fun.

I'll sign up. I haven't been very successful at the challenges so far, but I'm willing to give it another shot. I'll have to think about my goals though. I hope to come back from the conference highly motivated to get back to work.

I was afraid this was coming. I want to keep plugging away at my current WIP, but I'm just going to have to wait until we're a little closer before I can commit. Too many things still up in the air.

But oh, do I want to!

Count me in! I need to get another novel written and April sounds like as good of a month as any. Now to start naming those characters...

I am also doing the April BIAM over on latterdayauthors.com forum. (They should have it posted sometime this week.) Can I count my words in both places--here and there? If I can, I'll post in here too. If not, I have to stick with that one because I'm in charge of the virtual getaway.

I'm not sure what my daily word count will be. Still thinking about it. But if you approve my participation, I'll decide before the start of the month.

P.S. I love the dark red on your new template. Gorgeous!

Thanks for joining, everyone who has so far!

Karlene, I'll let you use your word count from both places.

I'll take the challenge, Tristi! I love it when you do this. You're awesome!

I'm taking that challenge, Tristi. After the Republican Caucuses tonight I'm hitting it HARD! I will have Standing on the Fifth completed in four weeks. Look to have a manuscript in your email shortly thereafter.

I'm in. I'm working on a brand new project which could really use this BIAM. I'm so ready!

Okay, this is really scary for me, but I'm in! I haven't written a word of fiction for more than two years. I'm not quite sure how to get around the writer's block, but maybe this is the time/place to at least give it a try. I mean, if YOU can't help me, Tristi, nobody can! :)

Now all I need is an idea for a novel.

Hey Guys,
Man, I’m so busy these days; I guess you’ll just have to…count me in! That’s right. I’m in! This challenge sounds super cool. I’m just a few days out from submitting my first novel and this will give me something constructive to do rather than sit around and stew over my submission. Keep me posted. As in, what do I do next?

After the conference this weekend I find myself with a winning chapter, an editor waiting for a book, and nothing to send her! Ack! I'm going to do like Karlene and double count my words for this and LatterDayAuthors. Believe me, I need all the help I can get. So, I'm in-and with such illustrious company too! :D Can't wait to get started.

Grr! I want to do this, but don't know how to squeeze it in for April. I am soo new to your blog that I am wondering how often the BIAM comes around? What I need is an editing challenge to get my two manuscripts ready for submission asap before the conference is ancient history with the lovely editors we met. Good luck to all who are writing new things this month I will be sending out good thoughts for you.

Fabulous new blog, Tristi! Count me in, though I'm out of town March 31-April 9. I'll still do my best.

Hugs,
Janet

Does it have to be something brand new or can I work on something I've started and need to finish? I need a kick in the behind to get it done, but it doesn't quite qualify as "new."

well, i've been sitting on a fence-post since the conference. This challenge couldn't have come at a more perfect time for me. I've been toying back and forth with the decision to keep plugging away as a "would-be author" or just throw in the towel and pursue a different venue in my pathetic excuse of a life. (ooo... i'm being a little harsh on myself, me thinks) Anyways, i'll take you on as one more "give it a try and see what happens" effort. I guess we'll see what i decide at the end of the month (if anything worthwhile comes out of it or not.) So, thanks for hosting the challenge, Tristi. I'll have to think over the "goal" and come back later with it.

Donna, I do this about four times a year, so you can grab us next time we swing by.

Rebecca, it doesn't have to be new, just something that needs work. I'm working on the book I started for the January BIAM. It's all good!

Kim Thompson said...

Did somebody say challenge? That's probably just what I need to get going and see some real progress. Add me to your list.

Rebecca Talley said...

Excellent--I'm in.

Keith Fisher said...

I will gloriously attempt to wow myself in the attempt to transpose my thoughts onto the page. but I will be editing first then start somehting new agter two weeks.

Marta O. Smith said...

Okay, Tristi, I'm in. Since the conference, my goal has been 500 words a day. Maybe with this challenge I can up that a little. We'll see.

P.S. You are a natural as the Easter Bunny.

I'm in! I'm finally feeling the log-jam starting to unblock re:my elusive Part 3 of my trilogy. Time to MOVE!

I have an editing job on the table which has to be done before I can hit the BIAM hard, but thanks to this, now I have a deadline. Haha.

My goal is 1-2000 new words/day. Hopefully more. But I'll start with "doable" and work up from there.

I forgot to post my goal. Silly me. lol I would love to actually write an entire book in a month, so with that thought in mind, I'm going to work on Gnomebody Gnows six days a week, 2000 to 3000 words per day. Wish me luck!!!

ooh, OOH!
Me too! Me too!
My goal: I'm trying to decide between two - to finish one that's already started, but has been stalled out for over a year, working title is "Petal". The second is something completely new that has only a vague notion at the moment and no title yet. I'm leaning toward the second, though, and would like to have 80,000 words, either way.

OK. Sign me up. I have a gimmick, er, um I mean strategy that just might make things work. Plus some blessings have come our way that will hopefully ease my time crunch just a touch.

Gamila said...

I'm gonna sign up! I have something that I really need to finish. So, I'm putting my word count goal at 30, 000. This would be the best month to do this since student teaching is done in a week and I have spring break and no finals. Let do this! :)

Karlene said...

I have my writing time blocked out and I'm raring to go. I won't be writing on Wednesdays (that's the day I tend my grandbabies) or Sundays, but every other day I will be working at it hard.

I've never set a word count goal, so I don't know what to aim for. I'm going to say 1,000 a day, but secretly push for 2,500 (which is what I'd need to actually "finish" my WIP).

I'll be working on a middle grade fantasy about a girl and a unicorn.

I know I signed up here...but I'm not seeing my entry!! I even posted a blog about it...I promise! Did I not pass the word test??? argh!
